Oakland City Auditor I am pleased to be your elected City Auditor, working for and reporting to the citizens of this City. I am dedicated to ensuring transparency, accountability and integrity in the service of Oakland taxpayers. As the citizen's watchdog, my job is to shine a light on what's working - and what's not - by asking straightforward questions about your city government's performance.
Services
Oakland's City Auditor is an elected official and works for, and reports to, the residents of Oakland. The Auditor's job is to provide oversight to the City's activities. Nothing is off limits; the Auditor has the authority to access City financial and administrative records, plus the policies and procedures of all City agencies and departments.
To conduct performance audits and investigations that return in-depth and meaningful results to the residents of Oakland by identifying, auditing and investigating the areas of government most vulnerable to mismanagement, fraud, waste, and abuse. To serve the public with the utmost integrity while upholding the highest standards of performance and professionalism with a driving commitment to dig deeper and produce impactful work that underpins the effective, efficient and ethical operations of city government.
Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS) require audit organizations receive an external peer review at least once every three years. This audit is conducted by a team of independent auditors from other governmental jurisdictions and provides assurance that established policies, procedures, and applicable standards are being followed.
The Office of the City Auditor is a member of the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA). It is a professional organization committed to supporting and improving local government auditing through advocacy, collaboration, education, and training while upholding and promoting the highest standards of professional ethics.
As an independently elected official, I am able to be objective, impartial and resolute when auditing the City. No one within Oakland's administration can influence what I look at, how I go about investigating it, or what I find. I am your eyes and ears inside City Hall. The Office of the City Auditor is currently staffed at 50% of a required level for a city of Oakland's size.
