If a business friend asked me who I'd recommend for business evaluations and damage calculations I could not in good confidence recommend Norman, Townsend, Johnson until some core improvements are made. I've used them twice. The first time was for a business evaluation. The second time was for a lawsuit where a previous employee, after being let go, had violated their employee agreements and caused damage to our company.

I had to fire Merrill with NTJ and switch to another firm. Here is what I have learned during this process: 1) Trust your instincts. There are not a lot of options to choose from and as such the local courts find them credible. However, they don't know your business and make assumptions that are incorrect and costly. The second firm, Rick Miranda with Houlihan Valuation Advisors, was so much better than Merrill but still made an assumption that was incorrect.

After showing data to disprove Rick's assumption it added 100k we could seek in damages. 2) Find someone proactive not reactive. Merrill had an initial phone call with me where I promised to send him the requested information that day which I did. Two months passed. I called Merrill and asked how things were going. He told me he never received the email.

When I communicated I had sent it to both him and our lawyer he remembered that his email had gone down. Fair enough. I asked if he had tried to reach me. No. Why not? Not his fault. Six months to do 10-20 hours of work is not acceptable. Compare that to Rick. He came down to my business and told me each week where he was at. 3) Make sure you get a contract in place.

These accountants are paid hourly. Merrill did one phone call and 6 months later called to say he needed to be paid. I thought the phone call would be about going over his work. When asked to see his findings he told me not until I pay. I told him that after six months of delaying I had no confidence in his work and that I'd need to see something before paying.

Without any interactions there is no way his findings are accurate. Time has proven me right. He has since sent me a bill (7K) for double what I paid Rick. Contrast Rick: he came down to our offices to understand the scope of the project. That night he sent me the proposal and I mailed the retainer the next day. He worked with me throughout and billed us 11 hours in total. I hope this helps if you find yourself like me needing these type of services!
